Title: Love Your View
Artist: Kim Kitchen

Medium: Collage, Found Objects
Dimensions: Matted & Framed: 26” x 26” x 2”
Love Your View speaks to our belongings that, without doubt, are taking over. It reflects cumulative greed, the need to shop, to own, to attain, to have, to discard, and our collective denial of waste ownership.
From
layers of textiles, packaging, components, tires, and reams of endless items once deemed valuable, serving for brief moments in time, to then reside forever to toxify Earth’s landscape. And bound within the piles of our debris flows the colourful magnification of human feces.
A multidisciplinary artist currently working in collage, which involves re-using and re-making within the production of the work, while being mindful of my artistic footprint. As I examine the realities of human destruction, I am perplexed by the lack of will and the inability to do what is required to ensure the survival and existence of Earth. I choose to disassociate with the institutionally prescribed aesthetic, permitting myself to create that which can be difficult, harsh, concerning, sorrowful and disheartening. I create collages that speak to the current realities of our time, with the intention of accessing my internal dialogue and my personal response to the resistance of engagement, the rejection of care and consideration for Mother.

This work created while on artist residency at Iris Art Centre in the countryside of Greece in March of 2024 and supported by the Canada Council for the Arts and Ontario Arts Council.
The narrative of this triptych begins with the militarism of our time, a civilization mired in dictatorship, ownership, slavery, conflict, rule and rape dictating the destruction of MOTHER and all in the natural world.
The second panel of MOTHER, wisdom, seeking truth, ancient old throughout the passage of time immemorial. Civilizations that honour and value life-giving and sustaining gifts of Mother. Inherit ways to nurture, nourish and develop with deep respect and care.
The third panel is the result of collective love for MOTHER. When seeds, birds, bees and butterflies are what we value with dedication and commitment to protect SHE in which the waters, land and habitat is regarded as our life contract.
Our time here on Earth, a blessing and opportunity, contributing to the generational offerings of respect and care.
A peaceful form of revolution, art expresses and generates a narrative from lived experiences within the current culture. The opportunity to create from an array of feelings, from despair to euphoria and everything in between. Art has the power to provoke a commitment for both the creator and viewer. As these concerns have deepened throughout my life, I am aware that every action of every human, every single day, is critical in considering what it is we truly value.
