Her Voice The Waves Like Silk

Research residency on the shore of Lake Superior August 2019.

Analysis of relationship between Kim’s ability and artistic production.

"My body metaphorically is situated somewhere in the nexus of both becoming and unbecoming; a rebirth through surrender. With significant changes in mobility, old spaces become unknown insofar as the body must learn anew how to navigate through them."

Between Pheasants Contemporary

Exhibition Review by Paige Lockton ∆ March 4 2023

At the opening for her latest art installation, 'Her Voice the Waves Like Silk', Kim Kitchen enchanted our senses, opening us to discussion about our journey in these bodies through life and death, and the importance of making art accessible to all.

Kim has continued to make art through the debilitating effects of Rheumatoid Disease. She learned that she can still play a vibrant, evocative part of the art community by embracing a change of approach. While her practice was once solitary, it now requires the contribution of others to come to fruition: community.

Kim appreciated the fulsome full-circleness of this part of her journey, punctuating her thoughts on the newly discovered joy of creating through collaboration, with a bout of her gorgeously unrestrained laughter. She has, after all, always been about communing with nature AND building community ... so this is a natural extension of everything she believes in.
Kim is another rock star of joy finding through the difficulties and shit storms of Life; helping us to remember that ANYTHING is possible when we surrender to what is, and open ourselves to what may be.

Thank you, Kim.

Her Voice the Waves Like Silk  ∆  THE JOURNAL

The work resulted from a dream I had - to one day return to the shores of Lake Superior. Rheumatoid Disease arrived and for the next three years I was bed ridden and my world changed. ART that resonates within has and continues to be about my body connected within the northern landscape. Disability has shifted my practice in numerous ways. When I recovered well enough to undertake this residency, the dream realized of returning in new ways to places that have informed, inspired and are beloved came to be.
